Black Coffee, one of the country’s leading fashion brands, will be opening a store at the all-new 27 Boxes shopping centre in Melville, Johannesburg, tomorrow. In an upcoming Skattie interview, designer Jacques van der Watt said he was excited to be part of the new development. “We thought it would be great fun to be part of the regeneration of Melville. We’re very excited to share that with everyone.”
27 Boxes is South Africa’s first shipping container shopping centre. “It follows the global trend of container shopping centres, the most famous of which is probably Re:Start, erected in Christchurch, New Zealand, after the disaster there. I think it was one of the first, strong positive things to come out of that,” Jacques said in reference to the 2011 earthquake that devastated New Zealand’s second-largest city.
Johannesburg also joins London and Paris, who have Box City and George Pampidou Centre, respectively, built entirely of shipping containers.
