I’ve said it many times before, Umlilo is one of Skattie’s favourite musical performance acts. That “future kwaai” sound is right up our alley, and the outfits are like, ‘fuck your gender binaries.’ Last time I wrote about Umlilo it was because I was blown away by this video (must watch), which has since been nominated for 5 awards at the Mercedes-Benz International Bokeh Film Festival.
The ‘Kwaai diva’ has been Cape Town based for the last few years, and is now moving to Joburg for a bit. “”After many stray braids, mascara runs, torn stockings and chipped nails, I have finally decided to quench my thirst and head to the city of gold. After so many years of burning up the stages of your backyards and street corners, the time has finally come for me to lip sync for my life.” says Umlilo.
Thankfully for us, this means a new EP and big launch/farewell party, in association with YOH! this coming Monday the 15th at Assembly in Cape Town, “Like most kwaai divas, I’m sashaying away with the launch of my second EP ‘Aluta’ joined by some of my fierce friends from Die Kaap.”
To get an idea of what an Umlilo gig looks like, check out my post here from the launch of the first EP, “Shades of Kwaai”. This time around, expect to see fierceness in the form of performances by Manila Von Teese, Kraal, Roxy Le Roux, Soneda B, Ragdollz, and SKATTIE will also be throwing in a DJ set.
