Firstly, we must express a great big heartfelt thank you to the woman behind Salon 58, Jackie Burger, who joined us as our guest editor this week, and shared so many gems with us through conversation with well informed and interesting voices in South African fashion. Those voices were also included in Salon 58’s presentation this past weekend at their soirée, which as always was a beautiful affair.
As I was driving back from the soirée on Saturday, trying to process everything I’d seen during the afternoon – and there was a lot, men’s grooming, men’s suits, jewellery from Black Betty, 16 black dresses from Drotsky, Black Coffee, Lara Klawikowski & Klûk CGDT, and more- it struck me how accomplished it all felt, and this was only the third soirée, and I started imagining what the 50th , even 100th one will look like. If there is anything you must know about me it’s that I get ridiculously excited when I come across people who are excited about the local fashion industry.
Sandiso and I have often spoken about bridging gaps often, and actually a part of why we started this website has to do with bridging the gap between our fashion industry and more general popular culture, runway fashion and streetwear. That is what I love about these Salon 58 soirées, Jackie and her partners manage to bring the fashion conversation to people who are outside of the fashion industry, in a highly interactive and unintimidating way. Hence I get even more excited when i think about how many more soirées she will do, how many more designers and audiences she will bring together over the years. I’m so into it, and i look forward to seeing Salon 58 develop over the next few years.
