It’s been a bit mad on mine and Sandiso’s side, in a good way; there’s so much excitement on the SA creative scene that we seem to always be writing about something, often for multiple publications. Do keep up with us on these nets and on them good old print publications. But of course this right here is our home, our little safe space, where we sometimes talk out of our necks, but most importantly where we continue our celebration of creative, fabulous and successfully executed steez. And this Wednesday we’re feeling this Selfi shoot hard. Some of y’all will remember this collection, which Selfi designer and owner Celeste presented at the Autumn Winter shows. She also recently jetted off to Berlin to show her work. But before that she hooked up with photographer Luca Vicenzo and art director Marieke Merts to shoot her range and bless us with this school library realness. Also, interesting location story that: Marieke had helped out a pageant thing called Mnr and Mej Voortrekker. Yes, this is an actual thing. Yes, I am dying to see. Yes, I’m like what the…? So ja, it took place at a school and Marieke tells us, “We both really liked the tones and almost desolate feeling of the building. It has a cinematic feeling to it, which we are both drawn to in our work, and one that Luca captures very well. We wanted to shoot it as if it’s not a school, but rather an empty building of sorts that the two girls are exploring.” All is well that ends well skattie. Marieke is also long time fangirl of Selfi, “I’d go to Design Indaba just to shop her latest collections, and own a piece from every season. I’ve always been inspired by Celeste’s aesthetic, and when she got in touch with Luca I asked if I could assist in some way. I felt that I knew the brand well enough to cast two girls who I felt embodied the essence of the Selfi girl. I’m a bit obsessed with both of them. Luca and I had shot with Jess earlier in the year, and both completely fell in love with her (I really believe that she’ll be shooting Zara campaigns in the future). We were desperate to shoot with Kyra (That hair! That gap in her teeth!) and were thrilled that she was keen to take part. Each girl, to me, reflects a modern beauty and the shift which is taking place in the fashion industry, and that fashion-forward approach is always prevalent in Selfi’s designs.” Enjoy the shoot. I for one am going to go and satisfy my curiosity by googling Mnr and Mej Voortrekker.
