SHANA, the Cape Town streetwear brand opened its first standalone store on Thursday last week. Situated on Kloof Street, entrepreneurs Shana Morland and co-owner Robbi Gorelick decided to feature a pop-up area within their shop space, for other designers and creatives who share a similar design aesthetic to be able to showcase and sell their own work.

“We started off with a stand at the Biscuit Mill market, trading once a week, on Saturdays. We then opened a pop-up store on Kloof Street, which turned into a three year venture with two other designers. Opening our own store is something we’ve always dreamed of and the timing just happened to be right for us to finally take this next step,” said Shana, who is the designer behind the brand.

Shana is the daughter of the acclaimed Stefania Morland, and we just had to ask what influence her mother has had on her work as a designer. “My mother has been my biggest inspiration and mentor in both the business and design side of fashion. We share the same design aesthetic and working with her over the years has been extremely beneficial to me,” she says. “Our brands are quite different. My label is a streetwear brand and my mother’s is more high fashion and luxurious. I think the two are more complimentary than anything else and it’s great being able to work together and to bounce ideas off each other.”

Currently in store is SHANA’s spring-summer ’15 range ‘Sunny Side Up’, a collaboration with Cape Town illustrator Cassandra Leigh Johnson. “It’s a light and playful take on a pool party theme. Embellished fruits have taken over the clothing in silhouettes that flatter the female form in a colour palette of subtle ivory, nude and grey.”

First to occupy the pop-up space inside the store will be Cassandra, with her alluring prints. Thereafter, the space will be made available to other creative brands. Says Robbi: “We are extremely excited for the growth of our brand and we’re excited to give other brands the opportunity to have their own temporary retail store.”

The space can be leased for as short as one evening to anything up to two weeks.
