After winning the Vogue Womenswear award at Who is On Next? Dubai, London-based South African designer Sindiso Khumalo will be showcasing at Milan Fashion Week next year. Now, that’s dope, right?

Who is On Next is part of the Dubai Fashion Experience, a platform for the promotion of emerging designers from the Middle East, Africa and Asia. It is hosted by Vogue Italia, in association with the Dubai Design and Fashion Council and Mohamed Alabbar, chairman of Emaar Properties.

Talent from places as varied as Japan, Angola, Ivory Coast, Taiwan, the United Arab Emirates were among this year’s 25 Who is On Next finalists, and if you follow either Sindiso herself or Laduma Ngxokolo, Keith Henning or Jody Paulsen – who were the other South Africans representing in the final 25 – you will have seen through their Facebook, Instagram or Twitter just how glamourous an affair the Dubai Fashion Experience is. Personally, I could feel the heat all the way down here in the Cape Tizzle (Sindiso said it was 34 degrees on the day they all descended on Dubai)!

Of winning the womenswear prize, Sindiso tells Skattie: “(It) has come as the most wonderful surprise. I have been drumming my drum on ethical, sustainable textiles for sometime now, and I feel like the message is slowly being heard. I believe fashion has a responsibility to be beautiful in more ways than one, and that’s what we are trying to do with our label. Having Vogue Italia and The Dubai Mall as supporters of our cause is very exciting and a huge honour. I feel so grateful to have been selected as one of the winners.”

She adds: “Our work still continues and we will be working very closely with a UN initiative called the Ethical Fashion Initiative on more projects focused on developing textiles for luxury fashion. We hope our point of view will bring a fresh approach to making, and respect to the makers.”

While we were at it, we asked her to send us images of the collection she showcased at Who is On Next. What’s not to love?
